Bayswater Waves Safety Week

Bayswater Waves is excited to announce that Safety Week is just around the corner! From Monday, 19 August, to Sunday, 25 August 2024, we will be dedicating our Swim School lessons to an important theme: Inland Waterways Safety.

Why Focus on Inland Waterways?

Inland waterways such as rivers, lakes, streams, and dams are beautiful but can be deceptively dangerous. Unlike the controlled environment of a swimming pool, these natural water bodies present unique hazards—submerged objects, sudden depth changes, slippery banks, and strong currents, to name a few. Educating children about these risks is crucial to preventing accidents and drownings.

What Will Be Covered During Safety Week?

Throughout Safety Week, our swimming lessons will emphasize recognizing and responding to the specific dangers of inland waterways. The curriculum will include both practical and theoretical components, ensuring that students not only understand the risks but also know how to act in an emergency.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Recognizing Dangers: Students will learn to identify common hazards found in rivers, lakes, and other inland waterways, such as submerged rocks, fast-flowing water, and uneven surfaces.
  • Safe Entries: Lessons will focus on practicing safe ways to enter water environments, minimizing the risk of injury or sudden immersion in deep water.
  • Treading Water & Signaling for Help: Essential skills like treading water and effective signaling will be taught, providing students with the tools they need to survive and call for assistance if they find themselves in trouble.
  • Different Types of Rescues: Students will be introduced to various rescue techniques, emphasizing the importance of staying safe while helping others in need.
  • Survival Swimming: Building endurance and confidence in the water is key. Our lessons will include survival swimming techniques to help students stay afloat and navigate challenging conditions.

Clothing Requirements

To create a realistic learning environment, we ask that your child (and parent in Parent & Baby classes) come to lessons dressed in the following clothing:

  • Under 6 years: Shorts and a t-shirt
  • Age 6-10 years: Shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt or pajamas
  • Over 10 years: Long pants and a t-shirt (lightweight)

This dress code simulates the challenges of swimming in everyday clothing, helping students prepare for real-world scenarios.

Special Activities and Lesson Modifications

During Safety Week, some lessons may be held in different areas within Bayswater Waves to better simulate inland waterway conditions. Additionally, students might have the opportunity to wear a lifejacket as part of their survival training.

Why This Matters

Teaching kids about water safety in natural environments is more than just a lesson—it’s a life skill. By participating in Safety Week, your child will gain invaluable knowledge and experience that could one day save their life or the life of someone else.

Don’t miss out on this important opportunity! Make sure your child is prepared and ready to participate in this special week of lessons.
